About DAVID

David is a freelance director based in Birmingham, AL, his hometown. He is “flying solo” after assisting at many of the finest regional theatres in the country.

Most recently, he directed Circle Mirror Transformation at Terrific New Theatre. Before that, he directed “The Nora Plays,” a pairing of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (adapted by Thornton Wilder) and Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2. Both productions opened in March 2020, but never played in rotating repertory, as intended. (No need to say why.)

Other credits include Fun Home and The Big Meal at Terrific New Theatre; A Year with Frog and Toad at Birmingham Children’s Theatre; Middletown at Theatre Downtown; Well at Birmingham Festival Theatre; The Underpants and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at Homewood Theatre; and a tour of Ruth and the Green Book for Red Mountain Theatre Company.

He has assistant directed at the Alliance Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company. He was awarded a 2017 SDCF Observership to work with Marcia Milgrom Dodge on Gypsy at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

David graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a B.A. in English. He is an Associate Member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
